“Sugar” on ABC’s Shorts

Mark Meily is one of the few Filipino mainstream/commercial film directors I like. I became a believer after I saw "Crying Ladies" a number of years ago. I loved that film. Simple plot, great script, highly entertaining, quite mainstream yet it offered something fresh in the industry. I loved that film. Meily is gifted in comedy so I was extremely disappointed when I found out that Joel Lamangan was chosen instead of Meily to direct the film version of the graphic novel "Ang Kagilagilalas na Pakikipagsapalaran ni Zsazsa Zaturnnah." Heck, if there was anybody up to the task it was certainly Meily, not Lamangan. I mean just take at look at their filmography and you’ll understand where I’m coming from. And oh yeah, why cast Zsazsa for the title role? Is it because her name is Zsazsa???? Had the task been given to Meily, we would have also seen Rufa Mae Quinto play  as Zaturnnah which would have been a complete blast. Sayang.

Sayang.

I liked the graphic novel. I liked the stage musical adaptation. The film version, I doubt very much I’m gonna like. Fuck Mother Lily and Lamangan.

Okaaay, so moving on to what this post is really about…

Watch Meily’s short film later at ABC 5. I haven’t seen this one  but it looks interesting.

Mark Meily’s `Sugar’ on ABC’s Shorts

Critically acclaimed and multiawarded film director Mark Meily
features his very own short film tomorrow on ABC-5’s Shorts. It will
be aired at 9:30 p.m. and is titled "Sugar." The short film stars
popular teen actress/model Bianca King as a girl desperate for her
boyfriend’s (Rafael Rosell) attention. She keeps complaining on his
busy schedule, and one day devised a plan to win him back: by posing
to be some new girl with the name "Sugar." It’s another
nontraditional short you shouldn’t miss.

Mark Meily studied Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines
and learned filmmaking at the Mowelfund Film Institute where he won
several short film awards. He received a scholarship to study film
in Paris at the Ecole superiore d’ etudes cinematographiques, after
which he began directing TV commercials in the Philippines.

His first film Crying Ladies won the 2003 Best Picture at the Metro
Manila Film Festival. His filmography also includes La Visa Loca.
Meily currently lives in Manila with his cinematographer- wife Lee
Meily and their four children.
